Translating | Tutorial No. 1

Peer Feedback & Discussion
  • Consider playing with form and dimensions; can we translate the two dimensional form of the painting to three dimensional – eg. animal (pet) shaped pillows
  • Food associated with “cute dogs”
  • Baking and cooking – for example, dog shaped cookies; maybe there is something to be explored there with the textures of biscuits
  • Letter shaped cookies: A, B, C etc
  • Consider regions and the popularity of specific breeds
General
  • What are you trying to reconfigure?
  • Think of your line of enquiry: what and why? What is the purpose of your enquiry, what is underpinning or driving (purpose/ rationale) your work?
  • Let your process – medium and approach – inform or shape your understanding
  • Examine YiMiao Shih’s embroidered epic: Rabbits and Brexit – combining parody and social commentary
  • Why am I reconfiguring this? Changing form, experimenting with different colours and hues (for example if baking then the duration of the bake etc.)
  • Multiplicity and plurality as a key aspect of the visuals (paintings)
  • Lettering: variable type and morphing
Quick Thoughts & Reflection
  • How can I push the chosen visuals and step out of the limits of the canvas?
  • What creative decisions can I make keeping in mind the choice of medium and style – can my output be informed by Hockney’ style for example?
  • Look at further: colours, medium and creative interpretations
  • What political and social connections can I make with the chosen images: for example, the privilege of having a pet – is there something particular about Dachshunds?
  • Can I exaggerate features of the Dachshund – long body, short legged; bringing in elements of parody: “sausage” / “weiner”
  • Dachshunds as hunting dogs – “a creation of German breeders”; connection to royalty (class, power and privilege) – example, Queen Victoria
  • Tracing/ understanding the process of “breeding” dogs and creating specific breeds for specific desires – “torture breeding”
  • As a symbol of Germany (?)
